Welcome New Scout Executive – George McGovern

The Heart of Virginia Council is very pleased to announce the selection of George McGovern as the 11th Scout Executive of the 105-year old Scouting organization, effective September 1, 2018. After an extensive selection process, it was clear that George was a great fit for Scouting in central Virginia. He brings with him an impressive career with the Boy Scouts of America and succeeds Brad Nesheim who is retiring on August 25th after a 42-year career with the BSA.

Scouting Career

George McGovern has served as the Deputy Regional Director for the Southern Region, Boy Scouts of America starting October 2015.  Prior to that, he served as the Scout Executive/Executive Director of the Gulf Ridge Council (October 2008 – October 2015) and as the Scout Executive of the Flint River Council in GA (June 2002 – October 2008). He started his career in the Scouting profession with the Middle Tennessee Council based in Nashville, TN serving as a District Executive, District Director, Field Director in two areas, the Finance Director/CFO and as the Director of Field Service/COO from 1985 to 2002.

Background

George was born in Philadelphia, PA, but grew up in Raleigh, NC.  He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA before receiving a Master of Science Degree from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN. While at Randolph Macon College he played Division II Basketball and served as a Resident Assistant and lab assistant.

George has taught Sunday school, worked on the church finance committee, and helped as a leader in the AWANA Games program.  He has also been actively involved in Scouting by serving as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader with his four sons. George and his wife Karen have four boys Wesley, Blake, Garrett, and Landon.

George is an Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor, St. George Emblem recipient and has been a member of various Rotary Clubs throughout his career.
