Virginia Soil & Water Conservation Districts – Patch Program for Scouts

The Virginia Soil & Water Conservation Districts Scout Patch Program is open to Scouts to further their interest and education in conservation topics.  Virginia Scouts can follow the instructions linked below to earn a Soil Expert Patch and/or Living in your Watershed patch.  There are currently three patches with relevant curriculum to choose from.

Conservation District 2022 Conservation Poster Contest Patch
Conservation Poster Contest – Cub Scouts through Scouts BSA

The first is the “Conservation Poster Contest” patch which is for Kindergarten through twelfth graders. To receive this patch each scout would need to draw a poster.  This year’s theme is Healthy Soil Healthy Life https://vaswcd.org/poster-contest  The poster would be turned into James River Soil & Water or our office in Prince George County for the poster contest. The patches for the poster contest are distributed in December of each year.

Living In Your Watershed – Webelos through Scouts BSA

The next patch is “Living in your Watershed,” which is open to fourth graders and above. To earn this badge, your unit would need to schedule a time for me or a representative from James River Soil & Water to come speak to your unit.  Then each scout would need to complete a Google Form with 15 questions to prove that they learned about living in your watershed.

The final patch is the “Soil Experts” patch, open to third graders and above. Similarly to the watershed patch, to earn this badge, your unit would need to schedule a time for a representative from James River Soil & Water to come speak to your unit.  Then each member would complete a Google Form with questions to demonstrate your unit’s newfound knowledge about soil.  This program runs from April 22nd- to June 30th.
