Ian CoddingtonWhen one talks about Troop 444 at Reveille United Methodist Church, Ian Coddington’s name is bound to be at the center of the conversation. Serving as either Assistant Scoutmaster or Scoutmaster since 1967, it’s hard to imagine the magnitude of Ian’s influence. The number of scouts at this outstanding troop that have been touched by his leadership since 1984 when he last became Scoutmaster, is impossible to count.

You’d never know it to look at his youthful appearance but Ian began his career in scouting as a Cub Scout in 1946. He become a Boy Scout in 1952 and joined Explorer Scouting in 1954.

Ian holds the Scouters Key, the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver Award, Scoutmaster Award of Merit Award and the Cross and Flame Award from the United Methodist Church. He is also a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow.

Ian received his Woodbadge beads in 1996 and has served on the staff of three Woodbadge courses. He has been the Scoutmaster to two National Jamboree Troops in 1985 and 2010, for the 75th and 100th BSA Anniversary Celebrations.

He was the first C.O.P.E. Director at Camp T. Brady Saunders and has served on numerous council committees over the years.

High Adventure is his specialty and Philmont is one of his great passions. Ian has been the Heart of Virginia Council’s Philmont contingent leader countless times during his tenure as an adult leader.

He has served on the Board of the Boys Club of Richmond, and has been a trainer and instructor for the American Red Cross for 25 years. He serves on the Advisory Committee for the Tuckahoe YMCA and serves on the Grounds and Building Committee for the Garth Newel Music Center.

Ian is truly a Scouter’s Scouter. He is an avid hiker, backpacker and canoeist. An incalculable number of Scouts in his troop, the district and the council have felt his influence. You try to count the Eagles he has guided by his dedication, wisdom and example; just can’t count that high.

The Heart of Virginia Council is pleased to name the 2010 Class of Eagle Scouts after Ian Coddington, a true inspiration to Scouts and Scouters alike.
