Join Scouting Night Registration Fees for 2022
In July, the BSA announced a $3 increase to the youth member registration fee, and a $3 increase to the annual Scout’s Life subscription fee. New fees went into effect on August 1, 2022. Exact details about BSA registration fees for 2022 can be found at
Membership fees are prorated by month, so new Scouts pay for registration fees for 2022 from the month they join through unit renewal, which in the Heart of Virginia Council is December 31. The current monthly fee is $6.25. The National Council also charges a one-time $25 New Member Fee. Youth who were previously registered in the past 5 years don’t pay that fee, but a family new to Scouting will.
Therefore, new Scouts who join in August will pay $56.25 (5 months X $6.25 plus $25)
In September, the fee for new Scouts will be $50.00. In October, $43.75. November, $37.50…and December, $31.25. These fees are for new youth who complete a paper application and pay the Heart of Virginia Council via cash, check, or credit card. The Heart of Virginia Council does NOT pass credit card transaction fees on to new Scout families.
New Scouts joining online via beascout.org will pay slightly higher fees, as the National Council adds credit card transaction fees, usually around 3% of the total. IMPORTANT: After October 1, 2022, youth registered through beascout.org will automatically have annual BSA membership fees for 2023 added to their online registration.
A new Scout registered through beascout.org in October will be charged approximately $133 to join online. If new families want to avoid 2023 fees until unit renewal in December, the Heart of Virginia Council strongly encourages the use of paper applications and local payment of fees.
Scout’s Life magazine is now $1.25 a month for registered Scouts. New Scouts who want to also receive the magazine will pay $5 for that subscription in September.
