“WHY I GIVE” By John Hunnicutt

The Boy Scouts of America is a unique organization that fosters leadership skills, character development, and personal responsibility for the youth of America. This development comes through the Boy Scouts of America programs of Cub Scouting which involves the families, Scouts BSA which further expands the personal development for youth 12 to 18 years of age and culminates in the Exploring, Venturing, and Sea Scouts program. All of this is accomplished through the joint guidance of both professional and volunteer adults.

The greatest gift any individual can provide is giving back to their community. In the Boy Scouts of America this giving back to the community takes the form of volunteering on many levels – Unit Volunteer, Cub Master, Scoutmaster, Merit Badge Counselor or at some other level. This method of giving back to the community is what drives the success of the Boy Scouts of America. Our community is the Boy Scouts of America. Giving financial resources to the Scouting community is a method of leaving a legacy for the future youth of America, a legacy lasts longer than any physical award an individual may receive. It is an indication that you have faith in the future of the youth of America and the Boy Scouts of America. When your children or grandchildren ask “What did you do in the Boy Scouts of America?” will you answer “I received a plaque,” or will you say, I left a legacy for your future”.

Please consider leaving your legacy by becoming a James E West Fellow, joining the Second Century Society or the Heritage Society of the Heart of Virginia Council. Giving back to the Scouting community and the desire to leave a legacy for future youth is why I give. I have faith in the future youth of America and want to provide the means for them to realize their opportunities in Scouting – that is why I give.
