Boy Scout Troop 501 Celebrates Scouting Legacy

Boy Scout Troop 501 located in Varina, Battlefield District, celebrated its 100th Anniversary on Sunday, November 11, 2018, with a dinner at the Varina Ruritan Club. Approximately 100 Scouts, alumni, parents and guests of Boy Scout Troop 501 attended the celebration.  Former Scouts and Scout Leaders came to reminisce about the bonds formed through various Scouting activities.

Troop 501, led by Scoutmaster John King, is one of the oldest continually operating Boy Scout troops in the Heart of Virginia Council.  In the Troop’s 100-year history, approximately 60 men have earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank in Scouting. The celebration opened with a flag ceremony, Pledge of Allegiance and the Boy Scout Oath and Law.

Attendees viewed memorabilia and photos, shared their stories about the impact Scouting had on their lives, laughed and enjoyed food and fellowship.  The current Scouts also shared what Scouting means to them and what the importance of Troop 501’s 100-year Scouting lineage meant to them personally.

After the celebration, attendees were invited to Troop 501’s Scout House in order to continue to reminisce and share stories.
