OnTarget Shooting Sports Facility

A Life Aligned with Purpose and Precision inspired through the generosity of The Lisa and Charlie Luck Foundation.

OnTarget is more than a name, it is a philosophy, a guided principle that defines the journey of a young person through the Scouting program and into adulthood. It symbolizes a life lived with direction, integrity, and intention—just as an expert shooter sets their sights on a target, Scouts set their goals and pursue them with discipline and courage.

From their first campout to their final Eagle Project, every Scout follows a journey grounded in core values: precision in thought and action, focus on what matters most, persistence through challenge, and a deep respect for safety and responsibility. These are the same foundational disciplines practiced in shooting sports—where one learns to quiet the mind, breathe with purpose, and take aim not just with the body, but with character.

The OnTarget Shooting Sports Facility at the Heart of Virginia Scout Reservation in Goochland County brings this philosophy to life. Here, young people will engage in rifle, shotgun, and archery sports that teach them not just how to shoot, but how to live. They will experience the profound connection between responsibility and freedom, mastery, and humility, all in a safe, structured environment. Every pull of the trigger or draw of the bow is an opportunity to reflect the Scouting way: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, and always on target.

For over 110 years, the Heart of Virginia Council has been a cornerstone of youth development in Central Virginia, instilling the timeless values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. While our principles remain as relevant today as they were in 1913, it is the thrill of outdoor adventure that often draws young people to Scouting. Among our most exciting programs are the Range and Target Activities, where Scouts of all ages challenge themselves in a safe, structured environment.

At Camp T. Brady Saunders, Scouts receive expert instruction in shotgun, rifle, and archery under the guidance of highly qualified instructors. These programs help youth learn to respect firearms, care for them, handle the

The OnTarget logo visually captures the essence of Scouting’s aim. At its center is a silhouette of an individual in perfect form—poised with either a firearm or bow—representing the harmony of body, mind, and spirit that shooting sports instill. Framed above the figure is a radiant star: the North Star, a timeless symbol of direction and constancy. In the world of Scouting, the North Star stands for direction of the core values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The two stars in the Scouting logo stand for truth and knowledge. It is a beacon of moral clarity and purpose. The OnTarget brand reinforces the idea that all elements of the OnTarget facility—and indeed, Scouting itself—align toward a single goal: shaping youth who are focused, have discipline, are safe, and always moving forward with purpose.
