What is Commissioner Service?

The Boy Scouts of America Commissioner Service plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success and sustainability of Scouting programs across communities. Commissioners serve as vital links between local Scouting units and the larger BSA organization, providing guidance, support, and resources to unit leaders and other volunteers. Commissioners are mentors, advocates, and problem-solvers, fostering a culture of excellence and adherence to Scouting values. By offering personalized assistance and regular communication, Commissioners help units navigate challenges, maintain quality standards, and implement best practices. This support system is crucial for both new and established units, fostering a sense of belonging and commitment among scout leaders and members.

Youth engage in Scouting through various groups, including Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships, and Posts, across the five programs of Scouting. To ensure these units thrive, Scouting America provides a robust unit service program delivered by experienced adult Scouters. These Scouters are specifically commissioned to assist chartered organizations and unit leaders in achieving the aims of Scouting through its methods and the development of a Unit Service Plan.

Recognizing the critical role of unit service in delivering a successful Scouting program, Commissioners are present at every level to ensure that individual Scouts receive the highest quality experience.

There are 3 types of commissioners:

    • Unit Commissioners – assigned to 1 or more units to counsel, mentor, coach and guide unit leaders to help them deliver a quality Scouting program, maintain and increase member retention and ensure timely recharter.
    • Roundtable Commissioners – provide unit leaders with resources and training in program skills through regularly scheduled Roundtables.
    • Administrative Commissioners – primarily responsible for recruiting, training, guiding, motivating and evaluating the Commissioner staff.
