Heart of Virginia Council Unveils New Trailblazer Program Area for First-Year Campers

The Heart of Virginia Scout Reservation is thrilled to announce the relocation and enhancement of the first-year camper Trailblazer Program Area. As part of the ongoing implementation of the Heart of Virginia Scout Reservation Master Plan, this exciting project moves the program area to the Parade Field at Camp T. Brady Saunders. The new location offers closer proximity to restrooms and a more centralized position within the camp, along with a sprawling open field perfect for outdoor activities.
A Vision Brought to Life
This initiative is being spearheaded by Spencer Adams, a dedicated Scout leader from Buckingham County and a member of the Heart of Virginia Council’s Executive Board. Through his generous contribution and leadership, the Trailblazer Program Area is undergoing a remarkable transformation.
At the heart of the project is the Spencer Adams Pavilion, a 20’ x 40’ structure currently under construction. The pavilion will be completed by Christmas and will serve as a hub for the program area. By spring 2025, the site will also include water and electricity, shaded outdoor activity tents, teaching boards, tables, chairs, and specialized areas designed to support skill-building for Scouts working toward their Tenderfoot through First Class ranks.
Designed for Learning and Growth
The Trailblazer Program Area will feature:
  • Knot Tying Stations: Helping Scouts master essential outdoor skills.
  • Ax & Saw Yard: Teaching safe tool use and woodcraft techniques.
  • Multiple Fire Pits: Providing hands-on opportunities for fire-building and outdoor cooking skills.
  • Flag Poles and Other Resources: Supporting lessons in flag etiquette and other Scouting traditions.
This space will also enable first-year campers to earn their Tot’n Chip and Firem’n Chit, foundational certifications that instill responsibility and safety in Scouts.
Supporting Year-Round Scouting Experiences
The new program area is designed to support both summer camp and weekend activities. It will be fully operational in time for the 2025 summer camp season, ensuring first-year campers have access to engaging, hands-on experiences. Additionally, it will be a valuable resource for the Weekend Experience Program, enriching Scouting activities throughout the year.
Gratitude for a Transformational Contribution
The Heart of Virginia Council extends its deepest thanks to Spencer Adams for his vision, generosity, and unwavering commitment to Scouting. This new Trailblazer Program Area is a testament to the enduring spirit of leadership and service that defines the Scouting community.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue to bring this project to life and prepare to welcome Scouts to the enhanced Trailblazer Program Area in 2025!
