Scouting For Food

Scouting for Food is the annual food drive coordinated by the Heart of Virginia Council to benefit FeedMore. Last year about 160,000 pounds of food was collected by Scouts, one of the top food drives in central Virginia.

A Scout is Helpful.  Scouting For Food is the one Council-wide service project to address a serious need in our area. By participating your Scouts will develop a greater sense of purpose, a sense of service to the community and it puts the Scout Oath and Law into action.

Recruit a parent in your unit to coordinate this for your Pack, Troop or Crew.  Click here for a unit coordinator description.

October 28th – Units distribute bags to door steps (not limited to that day)

November 4th – Food collection day – Units begin picking up food bags at 10:00 am.
TowneBank is returning as the presenting sponsor and Food Lion is also a major sponsor of this project.

A few points for the November 4th Scouting For Food bag collection:

Be safe – no one should ride in open vehicles or backs of trucks or trailers!  This is dangerous and Scouts have been injured in the past even going at slow speeds.

Be sure that Scouts are being careful crossing streets to take bags to vehicles.  Young Scouts can get excited and not look both ways before crossing the street.

Be respectful of homeowners’ yards.  Stick to sidewalks and walkways.

Say thank you when you encounter home owners that are donating food.  Leave a door hanger on the door of each house that donates food and have the handwritten thank you side face out.  (There is a small supply at the council service center now if you still need some).

Not only is this a great project to support the food bank and those in need, it also teaches service to our Scouts and makes them feel more connected to the larger community.
