For this event, students spend time designing and constructing their own wind turbines with the goal of creating a device that is efficient, elegant and highly functional. To accomplish this task, and arrive prepared at a Challenge, students must perform research to better understand the science of wind, be analytical about testing protocols, think creatively about solutions to problems and work collaboratively to get their project completed on time.

Once at the event, teams will compete to see whose turbine will generate the most electricity in our wind tunnels. The judging criteria will be based on Turbine power performance, turbine construction, and knowledge of wind energy topics.

With a hands on learning approach to math, science, technology, and sustainability, this is a great opportunity for Boy Scouts. If you are interested in learning more about the KidWind Challenge, follow this link: http://learn.kidwind.org/challenge

This event is open to friends and families as well. Saturday is Young Numismatist Day, in celebration anyone under age 18 can partake in activities like a Treasure Hunt of answers to coin collecting questions and answers, and other activities. The Coin Club will also have a unique exhibit of Trade Items in Colonial America; very educational, about trade between the colonists and Indians as well as colonists with Great Britain.

Click http://richmondcoinclub.com/rcccoinshowinfo.html to find out more.

Each spring for the past three years, Arrowmen from Nawakwa Lodge have traveled six miles up a gravel road from Covington, VA to camp for the weekend in a primitive campsite. The lodge brought everything needed to transform a gravel parking area into a working base camp including the Bear and Antelope Café set up to feed the hard working crew. The logistics crew brought together the tools and supplies needed for trail building including the usual loppers and bow saws and the more specialized trail tools such as Fire Rakes, McLeods, Pulaskis, and Mattocks as well as sledge hammers, rock bars and spoons (shovels to non-trail builders). Water for the trail crew had to be trucked in from Covington, no small task when you have over 125 thirsty workers, along with countless dishes, pots and pans. Work crews were transported to access points on the ends of the trail and worked moving rocks, digging dirt and creating the trail Tread. Work over the weekends progressed through heat and cold, through rain, snow, sleet, hail and even some sunny conditions. Everyone came off the trail exhausted but enthusiastic about what was accomplished.

Over the past three years, members of the Nawakwa Lodge have spent an estimated 3000 service hours providing actual “boots on the ground” trail building and more than double that amount providing support in the background. That’s close to 10,000 service hours by the lodge. If you see an Arrowman wearing a Nawakwa Trail Crew OA flap, thank them for their service on Building a Living Legacy.

With the trail complete, troops, packs and crews are welcome to visit the George Washington/Jefferson National Forest for hiking and camping adventures. It’s an easy three hour drive from the Scout office. Contact the Forest Service office in Covington, VA for help on setting up your trip.
