*This class is for those who currently own and operate their own chainsaw and have all the required safety gear.  This is not a beginner chainsaw training class.

Chainsaw Safety Training

Why are we doing this?

  • To help prevent injuries related to chainsaw use.
  • To meet National Camp Standards.

What must we do to meet BSA requirements for chainsaw training?

  • Identify daily, weekly, and monthly required chainsaw maintenance items.
  • Properly use personal protective safety equipment and clothing.
  • Start and operate a chainsaw.
  • Understand felling, limbing, and bucking procedures.

Requirements to Operate a Chainsaw on Council Property

  • Be at least (18) years old, and at least one of the following:
    • Be a professional forester.
    • Be a certified arborist.
    • Have received training in chainsaw techniques from a Ranger section of National Camping School.
    • Have written documentation of having other training in these techniques that is recognized by the state or federal government.
    • Have successfully completed BSA Chainsaw Safety Training course, No. 20-136.

(Successful completion of this training program achieves this goal.)

What to bring:

  • Chainsaw
  • Chaps (approved chainsaw chaps)
  • Helmet (if your helmet has a face shield you still need safety glasses)
  • Ear protection
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Fuel
  • Oil
  • Saw tools

What to wear:

  • Sturdy work pants (jeans or canvas style pants, long)
  • Sturdy work shoes (boots preferred)
