First NYLT Course Held at HOVC

National Youth Leadership Training
Cub Adventure Camp, August 6 – 12, 2017

NYLT 2017

Heart of Virginia Council will hold its first ever National Youth Leadership Training Course at the Cub Adventure Camp starting August 6th 2017. NYLT is the BSA’s next level of leadership training for Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts after completing Introduction to Leadership for Troops / Introduction to Leadership for Crews and Ships. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

Who Can Attend

  • Registered Scouts 13 or older and Venturers and Sea Scouts 14 or older
  • Must have a complete physical, parts A, B, and C
  • Unit leader recommended

What to Expect

NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster.

Staff Opportunities

The course is currently seeking senior youth to serve as staff for the course. Staff service involves a high level of commitment with even higher personal rewards. Youth staff must be:

  • Registered Scouts / Varsity Scouts / Venturers / Sea Scouts at least 14 years of age
  • Leadership experience within their home unit (preferably two positions)
  • Should be graduates of NYLT or a comparable training program (Buckskin)
  • Recommended by their unit leader
